Is It Really Just PMS? The gut hormone link you haven’t heard about.
We’ve been told for decades that PMS is just ‘part of being a woman’ — something to ride out with chocolate and Panadol. But what if your PMS isn’t just hormonal? What if your mood swings, cravings, skin breakouts, or painful periods are actually coming from a surprising source... your gut?
The Gut-Hormone Link You May Not Have Heard About
Your gut does far more than digest food. It plays a key role in detoxifying hormones, regulating inflammation, and absorbing the nutrients your body relies on — all of which directly impact how you feel in the lead-up to your period.
One fascinating part of this puzzle is a group of microbes in the gut called the estrobolome. Their role? To help process and eliminate estrogen. When your gut is out of balance — often from stress, inflammation, antibiotics, or diet — this estrogen can be reabsorbed rather than cleared. The result? Heavier periods, breast tenderness, bloating, irritability, and emotional ups and downs.
Add stress into the mix, and the severity of symptoms can escalate to a whole new level.
Cravings, Mood Swings, and the Gut-Brain Axis
Have you ever noticed how your sugar cravings, anxiety or irritability peak just before your period? This is a likely result of imbalanced blood sugar levels, low serotonin production in the gut, and inflammation disrupting your gut-brain axis - the powerful network between your digestive and nervous systems.
And when this gets thrown off, so do your hormones.
How BodyTalk Fits In
In my clinic, I often see women who have tried every supplement under the sun and yet still feel like they’re on a hormonal rollercoaster.
Most often it’s not just a gut or hormonal imbalance - but underlying emotional stress, subconscious and inherited patterns and unresolved experiences held in the body that also need to be cleared.
That’s where BodyTalk can bring about such powerful change! It helps the body reorganise itself at every level. Two people may present with very similar premenstrual symptoms and yet their underlying issues can be entirely different.
For one person it might be constipation, unresolved trauma, and hormone receptor sensitivity issues; for another person, food intolerances, insomnia, and anxiety could be at play - and all contributing to underlying menstrual imbalances. With BodyTalk, we go beyond simply reducing PMS: we uncover and clear the deeper stories behind the symptoms - addressing root causes to restore true balance.
A Client’s Experience
A client recently came to me with long-standing PMS, fatigue and anxiety. While we supported her liver, improved her gut health, and brought in some hormone-balancing nutrition, it wasn’t until we worked on clearing a decades worth of grief and overwhelm stored in her digestion system (using BodyTalk), that her cycle became smoother — and her energy came back.
